Bulimia : A Guide for Family and Friends
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (January, 1997)
Authors: Roberta Trattner Sherman and Ron A. Thompson
Average review score:

provides hope for all involved
Our daughter was lucky enough to have been treated by Drs. Thompson and Sherman and she was able to overcome this dreadful eating disorder. Even with their personal attention, we found their book was a wealth of information, advice and pure hope for all of us. If you can't speak directly with the authors, reading the book will certainly be of help on the road to a cure.

Read this and get help
This is a great book for a spouse or a fmaily member who wants to help. It details what is happening and what can be done. However, it is not a substitute for therapy. Please get help for your loved one immediately. There is hope.

Tremendous resource for family and friends.
I have 9 years of experience with bulimia of a family member and also teach others about eating disorders. This is a tremendous resource. It's very well written!

Death's a Beach : A Jersey Shore Mystery
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Avon (May, 2000)
Author: Beth Sherman
Average review score:

A strong character and engaging plot
Just as ghoswriter Anne Hardaway is under pressure to finish a how-to home repair book she finds herself having to hire a workman to rebuild her basement floor. As this isn't enough, she discovers a skeleton hidden in the floor and comes to suspect that her late Alzheimer-stricken mother may played a part in its being there. Following the path of her mother's last years, Anne investigates a hypnotherapist, a philanthropist, and a run-down nursing home to either clear her mother or implicate her. A boyfriend pressuring her for marriage adds to Anne's confusion, but her determination and wit keep her from giving up. Anne Hardaway remains a strong character following her previous two appearances, and her humor and wit keep the novel from being overwhelmed by its serious plotline.

The Skeleton in Anne's Basement
The town of Oceanside Heights has just been hit by a nor'easter in October. Anne Hardaway's house has been hit hard, and she can no longer put off the repairs her home needs. But when the contractor starts work on the basement, he finds a skeleton. Reading her mother's diary, Anne begins to suspect who it might be. But, could her mother have killed this man? Anne finds it hard to believe and sets out to figure out what happened. The trail soon leads to a nursing home where the residents seem to have a regular pattern of dieing. Is there a connection? And why is that car staked out across the street from Anne's house? Meanwhile, Anne is having problems of her own with boyfriend Jack. He seems to be ready for a commitment that Anne can't seem to make. Will they be able to work this out?

This book shows us Oceanside Heights without the tourists. It paints a different picture yet still holds plenty of murder and mayhem. The writing style makes the town seem inviting, a stark contrast to the storyline.

The mystery plot took a little time to get started, instead focusing a little more on Anne's problems with Jack. However, about half way through the emphasis shifted. This bothered me only slightly and felt realistic. As with the other two in the series, I was confused until the end. With the exception of Jack, the supporting players in Anne's life have little more then a walk on part. I would like to see more of them if only to get to know Anne a little better.

This series emphasizes plot and setting. While I still don't feel like I fully know Anne, the series is perfect for anyone who likes their mysteries with a twist.

Another good story in the series...
This is another good adventure with Anne Hardaway on the Jersey Shore. She is busy trying to ghostwrite another book and dealing with major home repair herself.... when the repairman discovers a skeleton under the basement floor. In her search to discover the identity of the body buried under her house and wondering about her mother's involvement with it, Ann begins a trip back in time which involves investigating the last years of her mother's life. This is a good story that keeps you guessing until the end. all in all a good read

Directing the Film: Film Directors on Their Art
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (September, 1976)
Author: Eric. Sherman
Average review score:

Well structured insight to the different kinds of directing
The book contains information on every relevant part of filmmaking (working with actors, editing, music, story-telling...). Each chapter starts with a small introduction into the general ideas and is followed by a nearly infinite number of well-known directors' statements (usually half to one page long), sorted by common points of view. The missing star is due to the old examples which are coming from around the 70s.

EXCELLENT!!!
The guy's a genius!! A must-read for anyone who is an industry professional, wants to become one, or just loves motion pictures. Not only is the book full of very useful data, it's also very easy to understand and apply, and a fascinating reading. I had a hard time putting it down.

Looking for the author's address
my appologie to the hosts, but first of all my request is - is there any way I could get in touch with Eric Sherman? if yes, would you please be kind to help me out oversees, his ex-student to get in touch with him via e-mail?

Thanks a lot in advance

independent Director / producer Tamara Sulamanidze

I'm an independent producer / director from Georgia - the former USSR , oversees from US

Eric Sherman was teaching me at CalArts, an amazing personality, professional style of teaching with his own book is one of those best things I remember from the film school.

And above all, Eric was students' best friend, whatever i have learned in directing and producing in pursuing my film goals is thanks to Eric

Eric, if you ever read this note, please do get in touch with in Georgia, your favored student - one of the best ones - you once said.

Nat Sherman's a Passion for Cigars: Selecting, Preserving, Smoking, and Savoring One of Life's Greatest Pleasures
Published in Hardcover by Andrews McMeel Publishing (July, 1900)
Authors: Joel Sherman, Robert Ivry, and Nat Sherman
Average review score:

Good basic data
Sherman's book is a good introduction to the art of cigars. The glimpse into the history of one of NY's premier cigar establishments is especially interesting, and the graphics are good. On the downside, I think the author spends too much time promoting his own brands, and occasionally strays from the core subject.

Outstanding Work by Mr. Sherman
One would think that one of the world-renowned cigar makers/cigar shop owners would be snobbish and elitist. WRONG! Mr. Sherman writes like a true aristocrat, that is, without any snobbery or pretense. This is a very readable and useful guide I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys cigars or just wants to know more about them.

Knowledgeable, objective, easy to read. An excellent book.
This book covers the entire range of the cigar experience, from the history of cigar making, through the various countries that produce the best tobacco and cigars, through selection and care, to how to give a cigar dinner (with recipes!). I've given away two copies to friends and I'm ordering more.

Old Shirts & New Skins (Native American, No 9)
Published in Paperback by Amer Indian Studies Center (01 January, 1993)
Authors: Sherman Alexie, Elizabeth Woody, and Kenneth Lincoln
Average review score:

good book
This book seems simpler than Alexie's later works, though by no means do I mean that in a literal way. Later works reveal a deep and complex style and voice. This book, an early piece, shows what is to come. Alexie's voice is strong and powerful, with very pointed pieces arranged in creative and innovative ways. This is a stepping-stone book into his heavier works, such as Summer of Black Widows and One Stick Song. You can definitly see where Alexie is going in this book...up.

A real role Model for writers
For a long time I heard little bits and pieces about a poet named Sherman Alexie. I would see his name appear here and there, or a few words speak of him, and then I would lose track. After Smoke Signals came out, I vowed that I would remember Sherman Alexie and read more of what he had to say.

Years passed, to my shame. As a writer I was probably afraid on some level to begin reading his work because I had heard of his amazing success at a young age, but more important, his amazing output.

I finally decided to get a book, and I chose to buy Old Shirts & New Skins. I absolutely love it. The poems and the stories wonderfully compliment each other and tell a story of identity and pride. I really enjoyed the biting humor. it rang so completely true, I sometimes could not contain myself.

Based upon what I have read in this book, I will definately keep reading and buying his books.

Funny and true
This book of poetry has a real quality, a sort of grittiness so you know it's true.

The poems tie together present miseries with the history of Indian wars. But of course it's not the version of Indian wars we got through the movies; rather it is the untold part, of suffering of native people defending their way of life.

I am new to Sherman Alexie and new to American Indian literature; I came upon him through his movie "Smoke Signals." It's very good reading!

His writing contains heavy themes, but is light and graceful and has a healing quality. "Shirts" and "Skins" are the team names in pickup baasketball games; "'skins" is how Indians call themselves. I dont know what a "shirt" is - a white guy, probably -- that would fit. There is humor, word play and joy here holding up a world of sadness.

The Illustrated Collector's Guide to Alice Cooper
Published in Paperback by Collector's Guide Pub (June, 1999)
Author: Dale Sherman
Average review score:

alice cooper on the rd.
this book is very well done.the focus is on tour dates, where he played, what city, etc. in addition,it has some text about who the band members were,tv shows and special events, bootlegs, and much more.it is not a dedicated history to the man--but more a sleek year by year diary from the 70s to the 90s--in fact, reading this really makes you want to see alice live!i found it to be concise and a pleasure to read.very well researched!

Impressive!
I was very impressed with the intensity of the research and detail of this book. The author takes you chronologically through Alice's career, focussing on recordings, tours, film and television and books. He goes bit by bit, album by album, single by single, and fills each entry with loads of detail. Minutiae including who played what, on which song, how the song did on the charts, variation in design, dates, formats, catalogue numbers, trivia-pretty much everything I wanted to know about Alice's output from 1964 to 1998. The book is split into five periods: 1964-74, 1975-79, 1980-82, 1984-1990, and 1991-1998. It is chock full of photos (many of which I had never seen before) both in black and white and in color and information (much of which I didn't know). It is a fascinating read for the Alice Cooper fan, and written so it can be read like a book (I read it cover to cover the first day I got it), or used as a reference guide (I have referred to it many times since). I can't recommend it enough for anyone who has questions about Alice or his music. This book answers it all.

best book on ALICE collectibles available!
This book is jam packed of any and every item imaginable on Alice. It is an amazingly informative as well. Each item is described in such detail you literally get lost in it.Has lots and lots of photos of the merchandise.Has rare bootlegs etc, too. Don't hestitate on getting this one. It is a winner!

Sherman Fighting Prophet
Published in Hardcover by Russell Pr (January, 1993)
Author: Lloyd Lewis
Average review score:

The General Who Marched To Hell
In this works, the author depicted Sherman's temperament and the fighting style.Analyzed the compaigns through Georgia and the Carolinas.

Not your usual Civil War biography
Although Lewis seems to be a Sherman fan, he is very fair and is not patronizing. I am impressed with the number of sources Lewis drew upon in his writing. This is a long book and starts slowly, but picks up speed during the Civil War years. This is the first biography I've read about Sherman, and I feel like I "know him" very well. I think ultimately, this is a very good book that serious Civil War buffs should read.

AN EXCELENT STORY ON W.T. SHERMANS LIFE.
THIS BOOK OF LLOYD LEWIS' ON WILLIAM T SHERMAN IS AN EXCELLENT READ. LEWIS MUST HAVE SPENT A LONG TIME RESEARCHING SHERMAN AND HIS FAMILY, HIS LIFE AND TIMES. ANYONE WHO HAS READ THE BOOK WOULD AGREE I AM SURE. SHERMAN WAS AN INDEPENDANT THINKER AND A MAN OF HIGH RESOLVE. HIS CONTRIBUTIONS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO RESTORING THE UNION ARE CERTAINLY EVIDENT IN THIS BOOK. ALTHOUGH I AM NOT AN HISTORICAL EXPERT ON THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, I AM SURE THAT ANYONE WHO READS THIS BOOK WILL BE MORE INFORMED AN EDUCATED ON ITS HISTORICAL ASPECTS AS WELL. LLOYD LEWIS , IN ONE OF THE CHAPTERS REFERS TO "SHERMAN AND HIS INEXHAUSTABLE PEN". AFTER READING THIS NOVEL, YOU WILL FIND ALSO THAT "THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD". AFTER READING "SHERMAN - THE FIGHTING PROPHET", I FELT LIKE HAD KNOW THE MAN. W.MUNRO

Child Custody: Building Parenting Agreements That Work (Child Custody, 3rd Ed)
Published in Paperback by Nolo Press (January, 2000)
Authors: Mimi E. Lyster, Spencer Sherman, and Martin Stein
Average review score:

Valuable Only if you agree to agree
If the other parent shows up with this book it MAY WORK OUT. If you see the other side as being abusive and uncooperative, that's probably how he or she sees you. This book really tries to help in reaching an agreement, but you will probably end up asking the court for help.

Thankful to Have this Guide!
I am conducting my own divorce without laywers but through a paralegal group. I wasn't sure what I wanted to stipulate in my parenting agreement and the example given to me from the paralegal group was so vague. After purchasing this book, reading it and working through the worksheets, I came out ready to ROCK! I can't believe how professional and thorough my parenting plan turned out to be. Now getting the ex to sign off on it is another thing. But what I liked about this book the most is it really questioned your motive. And it strongly suggested that you be as fair and equitable as possible for the child's sake. I admit, I began writing my plan out of anger. But in the end, I believe the plan really was created with my daughter's best interest in mind. I definately recommend this book. Be prepared to put some time in into reading and writing. You will not be able to accomplish this overnight.

Very Helpful, Even If You Can't Agree
I found this book to be very helpful in explaining the practical terms of raising a child or children after divorce. My ex is abusive and was uncooperative in reaching an agreement, and I ended up seeking relief in court. However, I found the worksheets to be essential for putting into concrete terms what it was that I wanted for my son. In addition, I would say that most situations are not like mine, and if your ex-spouse is somewhat reasonable this book will provide the essential tools for creating an agreement with or without going to court. It features one of the best written fill in the blank samples of a parenting agreement I've seen anywhere.

Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of New Mexico
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (June, 1980)
Authors: James E. Sherman, Barbara H. Sherman, and Jim Cooper
Average review score:

Good book -- but information is out of date
The history in this book is great and it's full of pictures; however, many are no longer accurate. The book was published in 1975 and much of what used to be there is no longer there and/or the properties are inaccessable because they are on private lands.

Interesting Reading and Great Resource
This book is filled with pictures. It is a great book to read the history of the ghost towns and mining camps that can be found in NM. The authors have obviously done a lot of research and this results in a book that is informative, but fun to read. I particularly like how the authors have told various stories that are associated with each town. I find this to be a very accurate book also.

Great information--creates a perfect nostalgia...
If you're interested in the camps of early New Mexico...it's where to get the info. It's very accurate & has nice pictures....

The lion's paw
Published in Unknown Binding by Cassell ()
Author: D. R. Sherman
Average review score:

Confusion over 2 books with same title.
As a school librarian, I think people should know that Robb White and D.R. Sherman both wrote a book called Lion's Paw. White's book is about South Florida and three children sailing. I haven't read either, but have seen White's book. Sherman's book is about "a young African boy who frees a lion from a trap and must face the difficulties of loving and losing a wild thing." (Something About the Author, vol. 29, p. 192). I gave it a neutral 3 stars. I didn't want people to be disappointed when they ordered Sherman's book and found out it had a different story line. White's book is also available here at Amazon.com.

must read
I loved to read when I was young, but this is one of the few books that I read several times - each time I got something more out of it. It is one of only two books I read as a child that I loved so much that I STILL will reread them occasionally (when I find my old, dogeared copies) and recommend them to boys and girls of all ages [Just FYI: The other was "Fire Hunter" by Jim Kjelgaard]. It's been over 20 years since I last reread it so I've forgotten the smaller details, but I remember it to be just a very well crafted story. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to anyone. Excellent stories are timeless.

Wonderful childrens adventure of hope and the sea
This a wonderful childrens adventure about three runaways and their sailboat that takes place on the waters around Florida and the keys. The author truly captures how it feels to be at sea. The story is unpredictable and exciting at every turn.
